[Linux-PowerEdge] Question about PERC battery failure messages....

Becky,

It is true that, from time-to-time, the RAID Controller will go through what used to be called a "Learn Cycle". This is where the Controller battery is discharged and recharged to keep it "fresh" as it were, and to see if it is on the verge of failing; ie. if the tested charge in the battery after it has been fully charged is not 100% (or maybe some lower threshold) then it is probably on the way out and should be replaced.

This is what a Learn Cycle looks like in the syslog on an R720 running Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 with OMSA 7.3.0:
Sep 10 07:26:39 newyork04 Server Administrator: Storage Service EventID: 2415 Controller battery is discharging: Battery 0 Controller 0
Sep 10 09:13:54 newyork04 Server Administrator: Storage Service EventID: 2279 The controller battery charge level is operating within normal limits: Battery 0 Controller 0
Sep 10 09:49:39 newyork04 Server Administrator: Storage Service EventID: 2247 The controller battery is charging.: Battery 0 Controller 0
Sep 10 10:48:09 newyork04 Server Administrator: Storage Service EventID: 2358 The battery charge cycle is complete.: Battery 0 Controller 0

However, I cannot see this event in the iDRAC7 System Event Log of the same server, and, as you can see from the above, it takes several hours, not the 1 minute you saw from the iDRAC log.

Do you see anything in the syslog that matches these iDRAC events?

I'd be tempted to check it out with Dell, if for no other reason than to be on the safe side.

Cheers,
dave

Hi Alain,

I fundamentally disagree that a RAID battery failure message is just for information and nothing to be concerned about.

I have the DELL R720XD with the embedded PERC 710 MINI. Randomly, on any one of the 16 servers, the following messages show up in the IDRAC event log:

Fri Sep 18 2015 23:55:40 The PERC1 battery has failed.

Fri Sep 18 2015 23:56:40 The PERC1 battery is operating normally.

Can someone explain to me what is going on here? Is this something to be concerned about?

No, nothing to be concerned about, it is just for information. The controller battery goes through a discharging/charging cycle a regular interval. Perhaps, it is better that there is no power supply shortage when the battery is discharging, but that's all. I think this cycle is a test to insure taht the battery is still in good shape.

But Dell OMSA issue a warning when this happens.
