I've been using etch with 2.6.18 without problems of any sort for almost
6 months now. Give it a try. it seems quite stable. I had problems with
i686 (kernel problems I mean). Now I'm using amd64 and it rock solid.
Maybe you might want to install a 64 bits system, that is more
appropriate for this machine btw.
