Domainname lost after reboot on RHEL4 ?

Are you running NIS and have a NIS/YP domainname set?  "domainname" is a
NIS  command, but the stuff you're checking to troubleshoot is DNS
related.  Use "dnsdomainname" to check the DNS domain.
