What are the average and maximum number of files in a single directory?

As Dan Pritts says, your problems are most likely not due to RAID, per se.

In particular, I am told EXT3 performance with respect to the number
of files in a single directory is proportional to a quadratic
equation. In English, that means that the more files you have in a
directory, the worse it gets, and it keeps getting worse faster.

Also: Are you mounting your filesystem(s) with "noatime"?
