Openipmi is version 2.0.02-2, my kernel is 2.6.17-10 AMD-64 and the 
ipmi_xx kernel modules are from the 6.10 Ubuntu (desktop) distro



Both the sdr (list and elist) and sensor give the same negative values.

I don't need SOL just yet, maybe I'll grab a source tree of 1.8.8 and try.

So you are using 1.8.7 without problems, what distro/kernel are you using ?
