Yep.  This is probably the poster's problem, indeed.

'tune2fs -m0 $dev' will fix it.

The reserved blocks eat MANY gigabytes.  The default is awful for modern
hundreds-of-gigabytes drives.

I've poked the e2fsprogs authors about this, without success.  So on my
500GB RAID1 partition, I reclaim 25GB from ext's stupidity with tune2fs.
