Woah, you don't need to run the X server locally to get XDM and XDMCP, you
only need to run XDM itself.  By default XDM starts a copy of X on the
local display, but all you have to do is comment this out in:

  /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers

and XDM will not fire up a local X server but only listen for network
connections.
