The modem seems to work with the release kernel but not with 2.4.18-18.7.x.

I have located the driver source for the modem on a Dell media and attempted to compile following the instructions in the README file that came with the driver:
1. Install Red Hat 7.3 on a Dell
2. Install kernel-2.4.18-18.7 and kernel-source-2.4.18.18.7.src.rpm. This goes to /usr/src/linux-2.4.18-18.7.x
3. Install BCMSM-3.4.19-6.src.rpm. This goes to /usr/src/redhat.

Now what ?

I tried to run 'rpm -rebuild BCMSM-3.4.19-6.src.rpm' but the below spit out:

 + umask 022
+ cd /usr/src/redhat/BUILD
+ cd /usr/src/redhat/BUILD
+ rm -rf BCMSM-3.4.19
+ /bin/gzip -dc /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/BCMSM-3.4.19.tar.gz
