You've got the famous device ordering problem, in spades. :-)

watch the kernel messages as modules get inserted
cat /proc/partitions
cat /proc/scsi/scsi
Try to compare the three and figure out where your disks are. :-)

Originally, you said the kernel errored out with:
   VFS Cannot open root device "80b" or 08:0b
   Please append a correct "root=" boot option
   Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:0b

So, either your initrd or your boot loader thinks that your / file system is
at /dev/sda11.
But, rescue mode is loading modules and detecting disks in a different order
than your normal running system, fdisk /dev/sda11 because /dev/sda isn't the
same in rescue mode as normal boot.
