folowup to the ms licensing thingie

In all likelihood, Dell is not saving any money themselves by not
*installing* windoze - unless on the backend they save by not having to
employ as many people to preinstall windoze.  They probably still have
to pay an M$ tax on each box they sell, whether it has a M$ os on it or
not.  

As for getting the shaft from Dell: it's not nearly as bad as not having
a choice.
