Video problem

I'm trying to install a PE2600 with SCO Openserver 507. The system is
forcing the on-board video (ATI Rage XL w/8M of SDRAM) to use lowest
resolution and colors. Attempting to use a higher resolution results in
a corrupt display (black w/several lit pixels) when going to multi-user
and the PE2600 locks-up completely requiring a power cycle (not healthy
without shutdown). Also, with the video set to the forced default
lowest resolution, the PE2600 locks-up intermittently requiring a power
cycle.
Installing a external video card (STB) seems to improve the situation
with a higher resolution/colors and no lock-ups when cold booted (power
cycle). However, when a warm boot is performed, the video display is
corrupt with blue dots and squiggles. However, the PE2600 does not
freeze and allows a proper shutdown before cycling power.
Anybody with experience with this issue or has suggestions please
respond.
