Precison T3400 / Rhel5 / dkms / Nvida NVS290 driver

Installed nVida 14.11 driver but dual screen setup doesn't seem to work evn if I use the nVidia Xserver config program.

downloaded dell-nvidia-14.19-dkms.x86_64.rpm from dell repositry thinking the upgraded driver might sort out the problem

ran:    rpm -Uvh dell-nvidia-14.19-dkms.x86.64.rpm

it installed but gave me lots of error messages and now I cant startx

Can anyone advise me how to install the nvidia 14.19 driver without screwing up the x?
