Hi Paul,

> downloaded  dkms-2.0.17-1.src.rpm to /tmp

> at the command prompt ran;   rpm -Uvh dkms-2.0.17-1.src.rpm

You downloaded and installed the source RPM used to build
dkms-2.0.17-1.noarch.rpm , so all you did was just install source code
in /usr/src/redhat/SOURCE/ and /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/ .

Download dkms-2.0.17.5-1.noarch.rpm from:
  http://linux.dell.com/dkms/
and install that.

Or if you want to build dkms from the SRC RPM, issue:
  rpmbuild --rebuild dkms-2.0.17-1.src.rpm
