I've only used RHEL/Scientific Linux on the 690, so this probably
won't be of direct help...
With RHEL4, sound just worked with kernel 2.6.9-34.0.2. It stopped
working with kernel 2.6.9-42.0.2. Installing dkms-2.0.11-1.noarch.rpm
and snd-hda-intel-1.0.6p-9dkms.noarch.rpm, followed by a reboot, fixed
it.
I found it helped to disable the snd-azx module, which otherwise
seemed to get in the way.
I've never explicitly passed any snd-hda-intel options, but the
installation process adds "index=0". I've never had to specify a
"model" option.
With RHEL5 (2.6.18), sound just worked; again using snd-hda-intel with
index=0.
