Monitor goes to sleep and will not wake

I have a Precision Workstation 390 that came with RHEL4. I used it for
quite a while and had few problems. Since we're starting to transition
our servers to RHEL5, I reinstalled the machine but used RHEL5 (not Dell
supplied).
Now that I'm running RHEL5, the monitor likes to go to sleep (I think)
after a period of time. The monitor goes into power save mode, and no
amount of tapping the keyboard or moving the mouse will help.
The machine is still up though as I can SSH in from my laptop. The only
way I can get the screen to work again is to reboot the machine over SSH.
I have the machine set using the power management controls in Gnome to
never go to sleep, and disabled acpid and it is not running.
Any suggestions or ideas?
