No sound after upgrading to RHEL4.4

Gary, that's very interesting... Here's my data point.
In an effort to get _some_ sort of sound out of my system, I installed
an old Soundblaster Live card into my Precision 380. I rebooted, and the
sound card was detected, but X stopped working! I let the system
reconfigure everything, and now have video. (I don't know exactly
whether it continued to use the NVidia driver I'd been using before, or
not.) As for sound, both the old Intel and the new Soundblaster systems
were detected. System-config-soundcard sees them both, and when I try
the "test sound", I get no sound at all out of the Soundblaster driver,
but I get sound out of the Soundblaster *card* when I use the Intel
driver. (!!!) Something is really screwed up here.
And incidentally, technical support is one of the screwed up things. I
have a trouble ticket in, but I see very little evidence that anyone
with technical knowledge is actually working this problem. I'm paying
Dell for support why again?
