RHEL 3 sensor access on precision 490n

Some of our 490n's sound like vacuum cleaners when the fans rev up.
Others seem to remain quiet. In trying to figure out if its just some
bad fans, or if it's standard behavior, or whatever, I tried configuring
the sensor program (lm-sensors package). It fails.

The output from sensors-detect, would imply a number of things it tried
all failed, /dev/i2c* devices not attached to anything, the i2c-dev module
not found, /proc/bus/i2c* not found. It looks like there is no 82c-dev device
shipped with the kernel module in RHEL3.

The real question is - is there access to motherboard/cpu temperature and fan
speed information possible, which chips provide the access,
is there lm-sensors support or are the specific chips too new to have
lm-sensor support? Or I suppose maybe is there another program that provides
access to the data?
