The xorg.conf was incorrect, setting it to;

Worked.

I set the nologo option simply to verify that the options were taking.

So if I do xdpyinfo, I now see

HOME> xdpyinfo | grep class | sort | uniq
    class:    DirectColor
    class:    GrayScale
    class:    PseudoColor
    class:    TrueColor
