And the answer to my question is;

The xorg.conf was incorrect, setting it to;

Section "Device"
        Identifier  "Videocard0"
        Driver      "nvidia"
        VendorName  "Videocard vendor"
        BoardName "NVIDIA PCI-Express Quadro FX 3450"
        Option "NoLogo" "true"
        Option      "Overlay" "1"
        Option      "CIOverlay" "1"
EndSection

Worked.

I set the nologo option simply to verify that the options were taking.

So if I do xdpyinfo, I now see

HOME> xdpyinfo | grep class | sort | uniq
    class:    DirectColor
    class:    GrayScale
    class:    PseudoColor
    class:    TrueColor
