I just uploaded snd-hda-intel-1.0.6p-10dkms to http://linux.dell.com/files/audio/intel-high-def/rhel4/. Give that a shot and see if it fixes the problems.

Ok, I sort of figured out a way to get the snd-hda-intel to work reliably
at install time. What I eneded up having to do is:

up2date --nox -i snd-hda-intel
rpm -e snd-hda-intel
up2date --nox -i snd-hda-intel

For some reason after doing this in my install audio works 100% of the
time. (Well, 10 out of 10 installl attempts on my test system) However,
the commands above also generate error messages. I have re-directed all
these messages to files. In the last up2date command, I see this:

Warning! Cannot do version sanity checking because multiple
snd-hda-codec.ko modules were found in kernel 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp.

  - Multiple same named modules!
    - 2 named snd-hda-codec.ko in /lib/modules/2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp/
    - All instances of this module will now be stored for reference
purposes ONLY

etc,etc...

I guess I will just ignore these messages since sound is working now...

Hopefully it will still work whenever red hat upgrades their kernel again
but I guess we'll just have to wait to find out. Here is a link to my
setup %post kickstart script on the web if others can use some of it:

http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/hardware/pre-380-setup

The /root/eos/fix-audio2 stuff at the bottom of the script is where the
dkms rpms actually gets installed. I have to do another reboot to get
sound working which seems very wrong to me. But since I've gotten things
to work this way its just time to move on to other problems/fires.

Cheers,
