I did try deleteing the

/lib/modules/2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp/kernel/sound/pci/azx/snd-azx.ko

file. It didn't help. There are still messages in /var/log/messages

After a reboot. The volume control will not allow you to raise it up past 
zero.
