RHEL-4 update 4, X86_64, on Precision-380 - microphone problems

Following the recent threads regarding RHEL4-u4 sound installation on Pr-380 I could get sound *playing*
to work by installing snd-hda-intel-1.0.6p-10dkms.noarch.rpm .

I still do have problems recording anything from one of the microphone sockets using e.g. arecord .

Per alsamixer I tried different input sources (A,B,C,D and CD) and set the Capture and Input Mux sliders to 100% .

Still arecord hangs :

# arecord -f cd -d 5 test.wav
Recording WAVE 'test.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo
arecord: pcm_read:1196: read error: Input/output error

and gives the above error after probably 15 seconds.

What also seem odd to me is that only 4 items are displayed in alsamixer, which is way less than I'm used to on different sound hardware/sound driver combinations.

Does anyone have any idea how to proceed ? Might this be a configuration issue or is it a known limitation ?

Many thanks,

	Uli
