No sound after upgrading to RHEL4.4

Ok. I think I know now what it wrong.
The RPMs I was pointed at do not work when I boot into 2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp.
When I install the RPMS under 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL they work when I don't boot
into the smp kernel. Both kernels are presented at boot time but the
2.6.9-42.0.2.ELsmp is the default. When booting into the smp kernel the
volume bar goes to 0 and won't let you move it. But sound is okay on the
non smp kernel when booting into that.
Is this a bug in the rpms or is this a bug with the red hat installer? (In
other workds should I not be given the option of booting into a smp
kernel? Both the Precision 370 and the Precision 380 get both sets of
kernels when I do a RHEL install. Older models such as the Precision 340
only give me a non smp kernel with red hat...)
Thanks for any advice you guys might have. I am holding off upgrading the
kernels on our Precision 380's until I can find a solution for this
sound issue.
