Ok. I have re-installed the workstation so its back to its original
configuration...
Before I try running system-config-soundcard I try:
[root at moreproof ~]# /bin/alsaunmute 0 -v
Card 0 Driver snd_azx...
Unmuting ...
Play. Switch master(0) to 1
Play. Volume master(0) to 23
Play. Switch master(1) to 1
Play. Volume master(1) to 23
Unmuting snd_azx...
I run system-config-soundcard. It tells me:
Vendor: Intel
Model: Corporration 82801G (ICH78 Family) High Definition Audio Contoller
Module: snd-azx
Clicking on play test sound button has no effect.
Next I try installing the RPMs you sent me a link to. I have digitally
signed these rpms and have placed them in my own yum repository so they
could be easily deployed to the labs I mentioned earlier.
[root at moreproof ~]# /usr/sbin/up2date -i dkms snd-hda-intel
[A lot of stuff later...]
depmod....
DKMS: install Completed.
Your DKMS tree now includes:
snd-hda-intel, 1.0.6p, 2.6.9-5.ELsmp, x86_64: built
snd-hda-intel, 1.0.6p, 2.6.9-5.ELsmp, i686: built
snd-hda-intel, 1.0.6p, 2.6.9-42.ELsmp, x86_64: installed (original_module
exists)
snd-hda-intel, 1.0.6p, 2.6.9-5.EL, x86_64: built
snd-hda-intel, 1.0.6p, 2.6.9-5.EL, i686: built
After installing these two RPMs system-config-soundcard reports:
Vendor: Intel
Model: Corporration 82801G (ICH78 Family) High Definition Audio Contoller
Module: snd-intel
^^^^^^^^^
The above item has changed
Clicking on "Play test sound" within system-config-soundcard after
installing these two RPMs still produces no sound. My volume bar on the
desktop is at full volume and sound events are enabled in my preferences.
On board audio is enabled in the BIOS and my spekers are plugged into the
correct jack on the back of the PC.
After a reboot, I get this error when trying to run
system-config-soundcard and click on "Play Test Sound"
[root at moreproof ~]# system-config-soundcard
Wrong card index 0...
aplay: main:508: audio open error: No such device
Also, my volume bar is stuck at 0 (minimum I guess) and I can't raise it
after installing the two RPMS and rebooting.
If I just try to run alsaunmute:
[root at moreproof ~]# /bin/alsaunmute 0 -v
Wrong card index 0...
Here is my /etc/modprobe.conf after installing the rpms and doing a
reboot:
alias eth0 tg3
alias scsi_hostadapter ata_piix
alias usb-controller ehci-hcd
alias usb-controller1 uhci-hcd
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-card-0 index=0
install snd-hda-intel /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-hda-intel && /usr/sbin/alsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
remove snd-hda-intel { /usr/sbin/alsactl store >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-hda-intel
Thanks,
