Both the R410 and the R310 come with BMC functionality by default. The BMC shares the NIC that is soldered on the motherboard (we call it LOM for LAN On Motherboard) with the server OS. In this case the BMC programs its own MAC address to the LOM that is different from the OS MAC address.  The LOM filters traffic and sends it to the OS or BMC based on the destination MAC address.

You can upgrade the R310 or R410 to iDRAC Express which will provide additional functionality (like web GUI and WSMAN) but the iDRAC still uses the shared LOM.

The next level of upgrade is iDRAC Enterprise which provides a dedicated NIC for the iDRAC. In this case you can select whether to use the shared LOM or dedicated NIC for iDRAC.

Which NIC are you programming for the BMC or iDRAC?

Yes, that's the situation.

Sorry but I'm a little confused about iDRAC, BMC and IPMI. In a Dell
R410 that I see the BMC interface is via a separate interface. In this Dell R310 is shared with GB1. Is this OK?
