PowerEdge 850 IPMI

Hello all,
 
I have an 850 running CentOS 4.4. The other day I had a kernel panic but
for some reason I couldn't get to the IPMI interface either. Is this
expected behaviour? I would have thought the IPMI stuff would be handled
in another, separate part of the interface for occasions like this.
 
Has anyone else had a similar experience?
