vmware ESXi 4.0 / host system monitoring

Thanks for pointing out check_esx_wbem, Chris. I've been using the op5 perl script, check_esx3, for monitoring the individual components within ESX, but I'm adding check_esx_wbem to monitor the overall hardware health of each ESXi server.

to keep the list informed:
under the link below, you find a python script (check_esx_wbem.py) which polls all information from the poweredge hardware ESXi is aware of (including PERC controller, raid configuration, disk status, PSU status, CPU, RAM, fans,…). The output of the script shows all related information about the hardware and it’s configuration and the last line contains the system-wide status – usually just “OK”
it’s easy to configure nagios, or any given monitoring solution to check periodically for that “OK” and throw an alert if the last line =! “OK”
I’ve tested this with ESXi, Version 4.0 and a Poweredge 2950 III Server with Perc6 Raid controller and everything seems to work well.

Thanks for your help!

chris

We use zabbix instead, but it is possible to do impi monitoring of the machine. Also with a python script you can bring out the contents of the health status screen from esxi and then use that in your monitoring solution. I think ESXi will see the Perc6 with no problems... If not then might want to see if can get MegaCli running on esxi and then pull the data out from that.

Subject: vmware ESXi 4.0 / host system monitoring
Hello,
i am currently in an evaluation process of the free vmware hypervisor ESXi 4.0 and I was wondering if someone could give me a hint how one could monitor the hardware resources of the ESXi host system – in my case a poweredge 2950III with SAS perc6 raid controller – I’ve been googling around quite some time now but I only found information regarding ESXi 3.5 – however, the vmware compatibility list states ESXi 4.0 is compatible with my hardware…
I’d like to integrate the host system into my nagios setup, is that even possible to achieve? ;-)
Best regards,
chris
