Hey Mad,
We use open source for two reasons:
1. We are a community based project, we are a registered charity and rely on
volunteers to keep us moving so we like to use community software and give
it a chance, we are all about communities! It benefits us that there is
minimal cost with open source software because as a community project funds
are always tight and we feel that we are doing this job because we are happy
to be on a lower wage than we would if we were working for a larger
commercial company doing the same job, spending the extra unpaid overtime
hours managing, configuring, maintaining etc our open source systems because
its what we love doing.
2. Also we feel that giving back is very important. We give feedback to a
any person or group who's open source product we use (no matter how small!).
We get by our day today task through employees and volunteers giving back to
the company (above and beyond the call of duty and all that). We feel that
open source products are like giving back to the community; a great piece of
software is written and the writer(s) could go commercial but instead
licence it under the GPL or whatever and we benefit from that so we write
custom in house scripts and apps then give them out also under the GPL to
give back ;) its what makes the world go round!
James ;)
