With Broadcom NetXtremeII devices the link status reported by ethtool is
only valid when the network interface is "up". If the interface is
brought up (e.g. ifconfig eth1 up) before running ethtool then the
returned link information should be accurate.

Subject: Getting ethernet link status on PE 2950
I'm having trouble getting a good reading on ethernet link status for
a PowerEdge 2950 III server. I'm using ethtool to query, but the
results are not conclusive:
# ethtool eth0
Settings for eth0:
Link detected: yes
# ethtool eth1
Settings for eth0:
Link detected: yes
I know that eth1 is not connected, so it should not be showing a link.
These are the devices I have on the system:
eth0: Broadcom NetXtreme II BCM5708 1000Base-T (B2) PCI-X 64-bit
133MHz found at mem f8000000, IRQ 169, node addr 00221985e23b
eth1: Broadcom NetXtreme II BCM5708 1000Base-T (B2) PCI-X 64-bit
133MHz found at mem f4000000, IRQ 169, node addr 00221985e23d
The server is running CentOS 5.2 x86_64 with kernel 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5
Does anyone know what the issue might be?
Thanks.
