All '-T news' does is set a 4KB inode ratio to make more effective use of
disk space (ie ensuring there are enough inodes for every news article).

I remember reading an article by Tobias Oetiker of MRTG / RRDtool fame a
few months ago where he extoled the wonders of using an SSD device for an
external ext3 journal.  He saw a significant increase in filesystem
performance.  That might be a good middle ground.
