Upgrading memory 2850 to max

"Reading the docs, it seems that I need 4 modules of 4GB, and they have to be single ranked (1R)."

Not exactly.

The Lindenhurst chipset only supports 4 Ranks per channel, so 2x2R for channel A and 2x2R for channel B is allowable.

Another way to say this is that the chipset will only allow 8 ranks total, which may not be intuitively seen because there are 6 DIMM slots. You have 3 DIMMs per channel with this server, DIMMs on channel A are connected to the lower bits of the memory data bus and channel B to the upper bits.

My point is that the dual ranked DIMMs should be cheaper than single ranked, due to the memory densities required.

Get a quote from your Dell sales person first. We recently bought a lot
of memory (16 GB each for two servers, a 1950 and a 2950) and it was
really cheap (like 500 Euro for 16 GB!). When I saw that price, I didn't
even consider looking for other memory suppliers.

Maybe the 2850 takes slightly different kinds of memory modules...

HTH,

Tino.
