The SMART tests can be run concurrent to normal operations.  I haven't
ever had a blip from doing that, but you never know...

The short tests run quickly ( < 10 minutes ) and can give a quick
assessment of gross errors.

BTW, anybody here know if you can clear the selftest log on a drive?
Once you've run several tests on a drive it gets rather chatty looking
at the logs.
