I think your solution would work with that card in theory assuming all the
connections match up. I believe you will need to change Channel B to SCSI
instead of RAID in the BIOS and connect it accordingly.
The best way to backup really depends on your backup requirements with
regards to retention, security, manageability. You can use tar to dump a
bunch of files to tape, yes. You will need the module for the SCSI
controller and st loaded. You can manage the tape with the mt command mt -f
/dev/st0 <command> typically.
