As you like! :) There are many way to do this. SNMP is one of this.
I prefer NRPE because it is the best and recommended protocol for  
NAGIOS. I mean... "NRPE is NAGIOS!". NRPE is very light and optimized  
checking protocol.
I use it because I save a lot of time when I setup and manage my  
remote servers and because SNMP with NAGIOS often has problem.
