Brian,
check out http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/FAQ_79_3760.shtm
It also mentions Giorgio's remark.
Chris.

Subject: Bonding / Active-Backup on PE2850
Normally when I set up machines, I set up bonding as its default
(round robin). However I now need to set some 2850s running rhel4u6 to
use active-backup.
If I ifup/ifdown the NICs, it works fine and dandy, and fails
over, as seen in /proc/net/bonding/bond0
However if I disconnect the NIC at the switch/server, it doesn't
fail over. Doesn't even show that the link has failed.
Any ideas?
