the driver is part of the Linux kernel. So I guess you will have to
compile yourself a newer version of the kernel to bring the driver
version up.
An easier (but partial) route, is to upgrade your Etch install to the
Etch and a Half version:
http://www.debian.org/releases/etch/etchnhalf
The 2.6.24 kernel in that release will bring the driver to a newer
version (from memory, I think 3.10rc5. So not quite there, but closer
to 3.13
