We've been using third party memory for several years now (when memory
from Dell used to be really expensive). Lately, we ordered some whopping
4x4 GB modules and they where so cheap, we didn't even bother to look
somewhere else.
We've had no problems so far with third party memory (apart from
ordering the wrong modules once - non-ECC won't work).

You need to adhere to the system's memory spec, e.g. you need ECC
memory.
