Hi,
We've experienced the same problem, in fact I contacted Dell support, only
to get this response:
"The best way to clear that up is to reset the drac card with the following
command: racadm racreset Unfortunally there is no other option in this
suitation, this is the only command to disconnect and reconnect successfully
to com2 on this controller."
Not really the response I was hoping for. I would be interested if you do
find a better solution, but in the mean time I make a habit of reseting the
card after I have used it, just in case I need to get into it quickly next
time.
Kind regards,

Subject: PE2950 DRAC5 - com2 port is currently in use
Hi All,
we have several Dell PE2950 systems installed with DRAC5 cards. On these
cards we use a remote serial redirection to get console access to the
systems, which are running CentOS4.6.
When I log into the DRAC card I do a connect com2 to get a login prompt
on the server. The problem is that after terminating the session typing
^\ and exiting the ssh connection I am having trouble to connect to the
console again. I am able to ssh the DRAC card which is fine however when
I try to connect to com2 I get following message.
$ connect com2
connect: com2 port is currently in use
I can make the port available by resetting the DRAC card ($racadm
racreset) but this just does not look right to me.
I have noticed that this problem started after I set up the "External
Serial Connector" to com1 in BIOS as we need a serial modem attached to
those machines as well. When I change in BIOS the External Serial
Connector settings to e.g. "Remote Access Device" it works just fine.
We use following BIOS and system level settings to redirect the console:
#BIOS settings
Serial Communication
-> Serial Communication ....... On with Console Redirection via
COM2
-> External Serial Connector .. COM1
-> Failsafe Baud Rate ......... 9600
-> Remote Terminal Type ....... VT100/VT220
-> Redirection After Boot ..... Enabled
#/etc/grub.conf
title CentOS-4 x86_64 (2.6.9-67.ELsmp)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-67.ELsmp ro root=/dev/SVGroup/root
console=tty0 console=ttyS1,57600
initrd /initrd-2.6.9-67.ELsmp.img
#/etc/inittab
S0:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L 57600 ttyS1 vt100
I have tested and confirmed this behavior on several boxes. They are all
the same hw and OS though.
Has anyone else had the same issue? Any thoughts are much
appreciated ...
Thanks,
Kamil
