I've just finished a blog post about the new Dell-modified ipmitool that is now available in the OMSA 5.3 repository and it is here:

http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2008/03/03/48397.aspx

The Dell team that is responsible for our remote access cards has produced a modified version of ipmitool that adds support for several commonly-requested features. You can now use ipmitool to update the front panel LCD, manage your power, see dell-specific formatting for system event logs, and see Dell-specific information in sysinfo. See the ipmitool manpage distributed in the updated RPMs for more specifics.

If you wish to install this version of ipmitool, follow the repository setup instructions (http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Repository/hardware) and then install the OS-specific version:
  RHEL4: up2date -u OpenIPMI-tools
  RHEL5: yum update OpenIPMI-tools
  SLES10: rug update ipmitool

The source to our modifications is available as well: http://linux.dell.com/repo/hardware/OMSA_5.3/platform_independent/ipmitool-srpms/. See the readme.txt in that directory to see which srpms are used on which OS.

I have worked closely with the guys who wrote this patch to get it ready for submission for inclusion in the upstream ipmitool project. We have a few paperwork things to finish getting signed off, so you should see these as submissions on the ipmitool mailing list within the coming days.
