Success!  The direct update method using the .BIN file from the website 
still didn't work, but following the manual instructions posted here worked 
like a charm:

Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions on this.

Matt, if you can figure out a way to make this work by default, that'd be 
super cool.  :-)
