Can't reboot after Debian update

I've encountered situations where the kernel takes a long time to boot my
hardware. Its strange if you were getting an error though and it just went
away - sounds flaky. In my case it was my notebook PC, and I was booting a
Knoppix thumb drive I built. It took literally 1-2 minutes of it sitting
there idle before it would load.
