DELL SC1425 running Debian - Are stock 2.6 kernels known to work?

upgraded and so far everything is working like a charm.

linux-image-2.6.18-6-686 2.6.18.dfsg.1-18etch6 Linux 2.6.18 image on 
PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/

Although I don't quite follow why the dist-upgrade on the test server got me a 
newer kernel, and not on the live server. No doubt some subtlety of the 
dependencies of kernel packages, anyway history now.

Upgrade was 13 minutes (+ nearly 2 days planning and testing) including two 
reboots more than I strictly needed, had I been more on the ball.

The old kernel-image-2.6.8-3-686-smp did appear to have a problem finding 
something to boot from, one of those unneeded reboots :(
