That's pretty much what I do when g4l won't work on a piece of hardware,
although I tend to use Knoppix. I do pipe the dd through lzop to conserve
space on the server. Also note that Michael gives a wget command line
solution for patching the g4l scripts into a running live CD environment
at http://freshmeat.net/projects/g4l/.
I wonder what madunix means when he says "Ghost4Linux"? The g4l project
wouldn't touch that moniker with a pool cue.
