You should be able to use any Red Hat or CentOS release on a 6300 without any issues.

Subject: Installing 32-bit Linux on old PE6300

I've been delegated the task of installing any 32-bit Linux operating
system on a spare Dell PowerEdge 6300/450 server. Our purpose is to
experiment with the Adobe Flash Media Server. Adobe offers a free trial
version, but it can only be installed on a 32-bit Linux or Unix
operating system. All my current production and prototype hosts are
64-bit.

The service tag on this host indicates that it was shipped to us in Jan
1999, a couple of years before I joined the organization. I have no
knowledge of the upgrades applied since then. It seems to boot correctly
and does not detect any errors, but has no operating system installed on
it.

I've tried a number of distributions so far without success. Ubuntu 7.10
for servers was my first and preferred distribution. It seemed to be
installing correctly, but then hit a number of corrupted files on the CD
installation media, and I had to abort the installation. On subsequent
installation tries, it goes into BusyBox, but seems to hang checking out
aspects of the RAID-5 arrays. I'm able to use a Knoppix 5.1.1 LIVE CD to
repartition the HDs and reformat them as ext2 filesystems, but the
Ubuntu install still stalls with BusyBox.

I've also tried the Debian-Dell 2.4.1 from Scott Kveton (2006) and
bootbf 2.4.19 Debian (2003) without success.

Can anyone suggest what I might try to most easily get a 32-bit Linux
operating system installed on this host?

Thank you very much for your suggestions and advice.

-Kevin
