PE840 noisy back fan

I've just taken delivery of a PE840 with the E2160 dual-core processor.
It's all fine, except that the back fan is seriously noisy, and I've
not been able to find any way of
slowing it down.
I'm running Ubuntu 7.10, but I don't believe the fan is under the
control of the OS in any case.
I've run the OpenManage from the CentOS live CD (OM 5.1) but that
doesn't seem to do anything except
report the status. Same with IPMI which I can run from Ubuntu. Both
agree that the fan is running at around
1800rpm vs the low threshold of 912 and a nominal of 988 (where I would
expect it to be).
The planar temp is reported at 25 degrees, and the
Linux coretemp module reports the core temps as 30 and 31 degrees. The
room temp is 20 degrees.
These temps seem to indicate the fan is running unnecessarily fast - and
noisily more to the point
Interestingly IPMI has no processor temperature - the entity '3.1
Processor' has a temp of -62 degrees!
Have I got a BMC that's configured for a different processor?
Is there any way of adjusting the fan speed in the BMC (which is what I
assume is controlling it?).
