Looking past Debian the drawback of running any non-RPM distro on Dell
hardware is no OMSA, or a involved process installing OMSA.  The "drivers" for
all hardware is in the mainline kernel.

Like you said, if you want to run the diagnostics of OMSA, boot from a LiveCD.
 Hardware monitoring can be done via IPMI and MegaCli so I'm not even sure
what OMSA provides.  I don't miss it but maybe I don't know what I'm missing?
