Actually I have the Dell 112T DLT1 VS80 drive 1U unit, don't know if that makes a difference here.

I have a client that has the internal DAT72 drive. Every now and then the drive will refuse to accept tapes and the only cure is to powercycle the drive (which means shutting down the server). I'd always recommend an external drive. --
