you don't accidentally have the BIOS switch for "OS Install Mode"
turned on do you?  That would limit visible memory to 256MB, which
would be quite tight for doing a BIOS update with then.  What does
'free' report?

I haven't seen this behavior when you have sufficient RAM visible to
the OS.  Not to say there couldn't be another problem manifesting
itself in the same manner...
