Quietest 1U Rack Server?

Hi Richard,

Just to put another angle on it, have you considered having sound-dampened rack?
Then you can have the processing power and the "normal" servers, while still
keeping the volume down. I have seen them advertised in the trade press, but a
quick google for "quiet rack" or "silent rack" returns lots of results. Many are
designed to look like office furniture too, to keep with the surrounding
aesthetics.

Another possible option is some of the "ultra green" servers - several vendors
are offering ULV variants of the Xeon and Opteron cores integrated into 1U
servers, and these should run cooler, therefore require less cooling, however
SCSI noise on 10k and 15k disks is often more than CPU fans. Also, as a
generalisation, 1U servers are noisier than 2U units, as the smaller, higher-rpm
fans make more noise than those in the larger chassis.

Subject: Quietest 1U Rack Server?

Hello all,

I know noise is not normally a concern for rack mounted servers, but my "data
center" is in my small office and I would like to make it as comfortable as
possible. As I don't require a lot of horsepower and am running on a bit of a
budget, I have been using PE1650s for all my computing needs. They are cheap
and fairly quiet and so suite me pretty well, but I would like to know if there
are any other systems on the market that make less noise. My theory is that the
higher power Xeon processors generate more heat and therefor make more noise.
Is that accurate? What are your experiences with noisy vs. quiet servers? What
server would you purchase if you had to live next to it?

Thanx!
  Richard
