Hello Everybody!

I am operating a Dell PowerEdge 1600SC server which hosts our Web and Mail
applications in our University.
It is not possible to upgrade the kernel on this server beyond 2.6.8.
version, since the new kernels doesn't recognize the hard drives.
I tried apt-get, and compiling the kernel from scrap too without any
success.

We use RAID 5 on our system on a CERC ATA 100 controller.

I read a lot about this in so many forums, and found out that a downgrade of
firmware from x.62 (current) to x.61 is the solution.

I have two questions:
1. Is there any other possibility available?
2. Is it safe to downgrade the firmware, will I loos my RAID array, or my
data?

I do not wish to regenerate the full raid 5 array and restore the data from
the scrap!

Please advice me on this matter.

Yours,
