RHEL4.7/PE2950 and network issues

Have you played with any settings on the switch? I don't have any 3com
gear in my network (all the 3com switching gear I've had the
misfortune of using in the past has proved to be complete trash, but
that's beside the point), but have seen similar issues with a few
ports on one of my Cisco switches when I didn't have PortFast enabled
for that port. I'm not sure what the equivalent term is in 3com world,
but I'd start trying different config options for that server's switch
port.
